John Galliano’s Maison Margiela Spring/Summer 2024 Couture show set the fashion world abuzz over the weekend, but the show’s otherworldly beauty is also making waves.
Models were transformed into porcelain dolls via ultra-luminous skin, pencil thin brows, and muted cool-toned eyeshadows as part of the highly-theatrical collection, which sought to shine a fashionable light on the sex workers and street cleaners who comprised the underbelly of 1930s Paris. Adding to the doll-like drama of the looks, models teetered down the runway as though controlled by puppet strings, then twisted their bodies into flamboyant poses before the pit of photographers.
Unsurprisingly, TikTok immediately began attempting to recreate the magic of the makeup looks at home, with many beauty fanatics speculating that peelable liquid latex might have been the product behind models’ poreless complexions. On Reddit, investigators questioned whether Kryolan Liquid Glass, a synthetic product that produces a similar sheen to the skin, might have been the secret behind the look. But makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath – the creative genius behind the show – was quick to dispel this theory.
“We didn’t use Kryolan,” she responded to one Instagram commenter.
Now, it looks like McGrath might be set to release the product via her own line, Pat McGrath Labs. Alongside a video of models peeling off their show makeup, McGrath wrote: “Just back from Paris and wanted to thank you ALL for the love and support!! All will be REVEALED very soon.”
Strengthening this theory is a press release from the brand detailing the remaining products behind the ethereal looks, including Pat McGrath Labs’ Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Concealer, Mothership I Subliminal Eyeshadow Palette, and the Skin Fetish Divine Blush.
McGrath even went as far as to share a step-by-step tutorial on how she created the look… sans the product behind models’ otherworldly skin.
Beauty gurus aren’t the only ones obsessing over McGrath’s creativity. Her posts have been inundated with praise from celebrities, including fellow makeup mogul Bobbi Brown, who wrote, “Omg. You are the greatest living makeup artist of all time,” and Katy Perry, who commented, “My fav ever. Iconic. I’ve only ever used that word like twice. I think the first time was Beyoncé.” We really couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
