There’s something about Rozalia Russian. In a fashion landscape filled with beautiful, well-dressed women, the Melbourne-based creative consultant stands out. Brands are falling over themselves to work with her. Her collaborations sell out within hours. When she wears something, it’s not long until you see a slew of Australian women wearing the same thing.
Russian was among the first generation of Australian content creators. She began posting her outfits on Instagram for fun, and soon found brands reaching out wanting to send her clothes. “I started posting these really bad mirror selfies, the lighting was terrible,” she explains with a laugh in the new episode of What the ELLE? “Different brands started sending me products as gifts… and eventually my husband said ‘You know that you’re making sales for these brands, you could probably start charging them.’” This proved a lightbulb moment for Russian, who has gone on to become one of the country’s most prolific and in-demand names.
In this episode of What the ELLE? Russian discusses the unlikely road to her current career, while also revealing some of her much obsessed-over beauty secrets. She swears by saunas, doesn’t wear makeup day-to-day, and is convinced that the right hairstyle is the key to nailing a good outfit. “I know it’s controversial,” she says, “but I’d choose getting my hair done over getting my makeup done any day.”
Speaking of hair, the Kerastase ambassador is generous with the details of her haircare routine. “It’s all about the products you use in the shower,” she explains, noting that she loves the Genesis Fortifying Shampoo and Conditioner. “After having kids I suffered from hair loss, and I masked that by wearing extensions,” Rozalia says. “After a couple of years my scalp was an absolute nightmare, and I didn’t have the time to spend two hours washing and drying my hair.” Using the Kerastase shampoo and conditioner, alongside the brand’s Anti Hair Fall’ Serum, “totally changed” Russian’s hair. “I have to get it cut every two months now!”
Listen to editor Grace O’Neill’s conversation with Rozalia, where they discuss the sliding doors moment in which she could have been a professional ballet dancer, the impact that motherhood has had on her sense of ambition, the best way to tailor a slip dress, and more.
