Though we increasingly count Copanhagen Fashion Week as the opening act in the spring/summer season, it’s most accurate to say that fashion month truly kicks off in New York City. Starting in Manhattan on September 6, we spent our weekends aggressively refreshing our Instagram feeds and TikTok FYP to ensure we didn’t miss a moment on the ground. Of course, street style will always capture our attention, as will the celebrities sitting front row at the shows, but naturally, what we’re most interested in is clocking the trends that will adorn our bodies next year.
We’re extremely well practiced in being patient as we wait for the runway looks to hit stores, but we’re also endlessly grateful that we don’t need to wait when it comes to the beauty trends. Eyeliner techniques, shimmer eyeshadow placements, and wet-look hairstyles are three examples of trends that we have tried based on the looks coming down the runways.
This season, we’re turning our eagle eye to the manicures. Inky black polishes, barely-there nudes, and chrome accents are all on show at New York Fashion Week, and ahead, we break it all down.
Muted Earth-Toned Manicure
Classics are considered as such for a reason, and when it comes to muted, earthy-toned nudes, that reason is fairly obvious. At Monse, the Jin Soon Demure polish matched the brown tones in the garments and accessories alike without stealing any of the focus, and if you ask us, that was very mindful, very cutesy of it.
Metallic Accent Nails
Metallic accent manicures have been a big nail trend over the past two years, and have evolved beyond the ultra-viral Hailey Bieber glazed doughnut manicure (though that’s still absolutely kicking around) to bolder, more opaque silver chrome effects. At Libertine’s New York Fashion Week show, Celebrity manicurist Julie Kandalec embraced a silver chrome almond manicure. The metallic manicure was paired with a neon statement half-moon, making it the perfect sunny nail option for spring and summer.
Smokey Quartz Manicure
For the Prabal Gurung SS25 show, New York-based manicurist Gina Edwards created a smokey quartz-effect manicure using press-ons for the models to wear during the show. The nails were a creative take on the ombré manicure trend that’s been big on TikTok this year and perfectly complemented the gauzy, sheer skirts that wafted down the runway.
Midnight Blue Manicure
For a softer take on a dark and moody manicure (no, they’re not reserved exclusively for winter), make like Jin Soon did at Proenza Schouler SS25 and opt for a midnight blue hue. This shade is Abyss and, in our opinion, is the blue polish equivalent of a universally flattering red-wine shade.
Matchy-Matchy Manicure
Though the photographer at Alice and Olivia was rightly focused on the fashion, we couldn’t help but notice the matchy-matchy manicures. Models wearing florals wore matching floral accents on their nails, people in red dresses wore vampy scarlet talons, and this polka-dotted blouse was also paired with a bold spotty design. Consider us inspired.
Milky Periwinkle Manicure
One benefit of operating in a different season in the southern hemisphere is that many trends we see coming down the Fashion Month pike can be incorporated into our routines immediately. That was certainly the case at Monse, where a milky periwinkle manicure immediately caught our eye. The specific shade used is Jin Soon Bliss and we’ll definitely be giving it a run this spring.
Glazed French Manicure
The humble French manicure is back, baby, but in 2024, we’re not just sticking with a typical milky-white tip with a nude base. Subtle upgrades like this chrome, glaze-effect topper at Alice and Olivia add modernity to an otherwise traditional manicure. It’s a pretty addition to a pretty, sparkling ensemble.
Inky Black Manicure
For fans of an black manicure, the short-cut nails at Proenza Schouler SS25 will be all the inspiration you need to buck the predictably colourful, bright manicure trends this spring. The models’ nails were kept short and painted an opaque black, perfectly complementing the subtle shine of the leather looks coming down the runway.
